Burn it well

Candle care

  1. 01

First burn: give it 2–3 hours so the melt pool reaches the edge. This is what stops tunnelling.

  2. 02

Trim the wick to 5mm before every light. A long wick smokes and eats your candle.

  3. 03

Never burn longer than 4 hours at a stretch, and never leave one unattended.

  4. 04

When 1cm of wax is left, retire the jar. Warm water lifts the rest out — it makes a good brush pot.
